As we close another exciting chapter with our recent event, the Virtual Autumn Event, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact each one of us has on our profession. Court reporting is not just a job—it’s a calling, a craft that requires precision, dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility. Every time we take down testimony, provide captions, or produce a record, we’re contributing to the truth, preserving justice, and making a difference in the lives of many.
But our contributions don’t stop at the courtroom or the deposition table. Our profession thrives on the strength of our community and the willingness of each of us to give back. Whether you’ve been reporting for decades or are just beginning your journey, there is always an opportunity to make a difference by supporting the next generation of reporters and strengthening the foundation of our field.
I encourage you to get involved, volunteer your time, and mentor the students who are eager to follow in your footsteps. One of the most rewarding ways to give back is by participating in the A to Z Program. Teaching students the fundamental of stenography not only opens doors for them but also reminds us of the beauty and importance of what we do. There is no better feeling than knowing you’ve helped someone find their path and passion.
You can also make a significant impact by volunteering at our table during the Virginia School Counselor Association event held every October in Hampton, Virginia. Although, by the time this article publishes, this event will have already taken place, led by Vice President Dana Pon, I want to emphasize that this is an incredible opportunity to highlight the unique skills we bring to the legal system and beyond, including the general public by CART and captioning. It gives us an opportunity to help spread the word about our profession, offering school counselors the opportunity to learn about our profession so they can turn around and inspire young people to consider court reporting as a career. If you didn’t help us out this year, I hope you will consider doing so next year.
Additionally, serving as a board member or volunteering at VCRA events can deepen your connection to our community and give you the chance to shape the future of court reporting in Virginia. We are always looking for passionate professionals who are ready to lead, share their insights, and help guide our organization’s mission to new heights. Look for more information soon about events we are planning to organize during the week of Court Reporting and Captioning in February 2025 and where we need you to help lend support to educate and spread the word about our profession.
Lastly, we can’t forget what the important, hard efforts of the Virginia Court Reporting Foundation does to support the VCRA. The Foundation, led by President Kim Ribaric, will be reaching out soon, asking for your valued sponsorship funds, participation in a virtual 5K, and donations for the annual Silent Auction. Your tax-deductible donations to the VCRF greatly support your organization, the VCRA, in strongly fulfilling its mission.
The future of our profession depends on us. It’s up to us to spread the word about court reporting—whether it’s through social media, community events, or just casual conversations. Every word we share can ignite curiosity and open new doors for others to explore this rewarding career.
I challenge each of you to be the best reporter you can be, not only by continuing to refine your skills but also by actively giving back. The time and knowledge you share with others will not only strengthen our profession but also enrich your own journey as a court reporter. Together, we can ensure the longevity, success, and growth of court reporting for generations to come.
Thank you for your dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence. Let’s continue to inspire one another and build a stronger, more united profession.
With gratitude,
Michele Eddy President,
Virginia Court Reporters Association
